Spring in Frederick feels like the city opening its windows again. Patios fill up, Baker Park begins to stir, and Carroll Creek returns to its botanical beauty. Yet another reason to linger outside or indulge in a long walk through downtown.

Warmer weather, mountain views, and a vibrant social scene make spring an ideal time to visit. And at Visitation Hotel Frederick, the best of the season is at your doorstep. Plan for the ultimate spring weekend in Frederick with our local insider guide.

Friday Arrival: History Strolls and World-Class Culinary

3:00 PM

Check in to Visitation Hotel and start your weekend in Frederick’s most storied stay. Afternoon light is the perfect time to stroll our historic grounds, when golden hour beams onto 19th-century arches. You’ll pick up on details from Visitation’s history, but now, it feels modern and inviting, too. Unpack, refresh, and shake off the jet lag before an epic meal.

5:00 PM

It’s social hour at Wye Oak Tavern, carved from an age-old Catholic chapel. Head down to the bar, beneath the stained-glass windows, and pull up a chair for a local Attaboy lager. Need a post-plane pick-me-up? Opt for the Mirepoix Martini, a carrot-infused cocktail with pickled mirepoix that’s full of fresh spring flavor.

7:00 PM

Why go somewhere else for dinner when Visitation Hotel has one of Frederick’s best restaurants? A hymn to the classic American tavern, Wye Oak is the first joint project of brothers Bryan and Michael Voltaggio, two James Beard-nominated chefs from none other than Frederick, Maryland. Pro tip: start with the Maryland Crab deviled eggs, and save the dry aged ribeye for the main event. After dinner, the short walk back to your room will feel luxurious.

Saturday Morning: Coffee, Pastries, and the Creek

9:00 AM

Ease into Saturday with a slow start at Acorn Provisions. Order a seasonal latte, peruse the house-made pastries, and take your time deciding what the day should hold. There is no reason to rush.

10:30 AM

Walk two blocks to Carroll Creek Park, a tree-lined linear park in the heart of downtown Frederick. April marks the return of Color on the Creek, when thousands of lilies and lotuses emerge. The Community Bridge mural offers one of Frederick’s most well-known views, and benches along the creek offer restful space to pause with coffee and a book. This stretch of morning helps you get your bearings and introduces what Frederick is all about: artful, charming, and full of surprises.

Saturday Afternoon: Downtown Shops and The Spirits Trail

1:00 PM

As the sun climbs higher into the sky, head toward Market Street and Patrick Street, two delightful lanes dotted with boutique shops and art galleries. Pick out a new book at Curious Iguana, take home a handmade necklace from The Muse, or browse vintage treasures at One Goods Company. If you’re looking for a unique souvenir, there’s no shortage of shops with personality here.

4:00 PM

After an al fresco lunch, it’s time to embark “The Spirits Trail.” Frederick’s bustling beverage scene might just surprise you. Start at Tenth Ward Distilling to sample their Absinthe Nouvelle and Maryland Rye Whiskey. Or, for a craft beer flight with a view, move to Idiom Brewing Co. located right on the creek. Consider the trail a Frederick rite of passage; a chance to meet locals and sample spring flavors with a hint of afternoon buzz.

Saturday Evening: It’s Showtime!

8:00 PM

Plan the rest of the night around a performance at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Built in the 1920s as a glorious silent movie palace, the stunning center plays host to different events all year. Concerts, films, author talks, orchestras and live shows rotate every season, so no matter your individual taste, there’s sure to be something inspiring to attend. (Bonus: it’s just down the block from Visitation Hotel!)

Sunday Morning: Clustered Spires and Medicinal Marvels

10:00 AM

Use your last morning to see a different side of downtown Frederick. The historic district is a vision of “clustered spires,” church steeples from the 18th and 19th centuries that pierce into the sky. The self-guided route is easy and compact. Wander ornate sanctuaries and transport your mind to a bygone era.

The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is another Frederick must-do, albeit unconventional. Here, unique galleries walk you through field hospitals, surgical tools, and the medical breakthroughs that emerged during the war, many of which connect directly to Frederick’s role as a treatment center after nearby battles. The museum is small enough to explore in one visit but detailed enough to learn plenty of fascinating facts in a short amount of time.

A Spring Weekend Worth Repeating

What makes a spring weekend in Frederick memorable is not one single standout attraction. It’s the full experience. You walk instead of drive. You discover places you did not plan to find. You settle into a slower pace without trying. From your home base at Visitation Hotel, the city feels easy and welcoming. We’re willing to bet you’ll want to start planning your next trip before you’ve even left.
